I have read 20 plus books on polygamy including history books, autobiographies from the pioneer era such as Wife No. 19 and Tell It All, and many, many other more recent biographies from former members of polygamist groups. Kristyn Decker's first book, Fifty Years in Polygamy - Big Secrets, Little White Lies, had me so absorbed that I literally couldn't put it down -- I was late for work and would also read it until the wee hours of the morning. The new UNCENSORED version of Fifty Years in Polygamy -- Big Secrets, Little White Lies was recently released so I'm reading it again to see what I missed and what can I say -- I'm still riveted by her story.Perhaps it is the fact that I can visualize most everything in her story since I grew up in the same area as she did, but I believe her story of her escape from the mind-set of polygamy is one of the most compelling that I've read. She is from the Allred Group, but mentions other polygamist groups as well - such as the LaBaron group (Ervil LaBaron was more than less responsible for murdering her Uncle Rulon Allred in the mid-1970s). Her father, Owen Allred, took over as prophet when his brother was murdered. The day-to-day workings of the whole lifestyle are informative and fascinating as well. I consider it an important book for not only women, polygamist women, abused women, etc., but for all people living in the States of Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, and Texas -- as well as Mexico and Canada. And if you live in Utah (like we do) polygamy will sooner or later touch your life. This book is an important, gripping, excellent read and helps to lend to the understanding of the enormous amount of problems for women, children, and even men who try to live in polygamy.
I can't tell you how many books I've read on polygamy but I've enjoyed them more because this author seems to jump around on the time lines. This book is true on all points. My husband and I were both born in the Mormon colonies. He was raised there for 18 yrs. His mother had boarders at their home and and had frequent visits from the LaBaron's. The author has the facts right. The LaBaron brothers turned out to be very evil. My mother and grand parents knew them also. I haven't finished the book yet because I find it a very slow read. Not a very exciting read. Doesn't flow as fast as the other books I've read about polygamy but will finish this one eventually. We knew a family from Colonia Dublan that joined the group but left it after finding out how evil the LaBaron brothers were. He started his own church somewhere in Utah.We are very strong members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I've enjoyed learning about all the different polygamy sects that are out there in the world today. We have no plans or ever will leave our the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints like many of these people have chosen to do. I can't wait to find out what happened at the end. Maybe I'll read the ending before I finish the book.
The book informs the reader about the hardships poor women and children practicing polygamy suffer unlike the sister wives on TV who are well off with a home for each wife. In the Book of Mormons Jacob 2 verse 27 it clearly states that The Lord says that ""for there shall not any man among you have save it be " one wife; and concubines he shall have none. Jacob 2 verse 24 states many wives and concubines , which thing was abominable before me saith The Lord. I still do not agree that a man can be a good father to so many children. My opinion
This book describes in detail the many abuses and loss of freedom that women living in a polygamist society experience. I found the book interesting to read, but somewhat confusing in places. Some situations described between Kristyn and her female friends seemed like a gossip session that did not add any clarity to the point she was trying to make. I also questioned some of her relationships with other men in her life -- just did not seem to fit somehow -- hard to explain my reaction to this. I would encourage others to read as it exposes the cruelties of a polygamist society.
Heartbreaking account of one woman's life in polygamy. Not just a struggle to be free of the cult, but of her mindset, not all of which sprung from polygamy, but is much more like so many abused women, clinging to their abusers year after year after year. "A river of tears."
It was good writing. I've read a lot of escape from the FLDS stories; this one was about the AUB, a different polygamist group. I lost interest near the end, but kept reading to see how it turned out. At that point it was more a personal relationship story.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful book! This book gives the true picture of polygamy without the Sister Wives whitewashing! I am thankful to Kristyn Decker for her book on this subject eject!
Although I can pity the author for all she has gone through, the biography she wrote did not please me. Too much "precious", too much self-centered viewpoints. Important gaps in a story that is supposed to follow a life path. Others may have different opinions.
